Cloud computing and its associated technologies do not create new internet security threats, it has been claimed.
According to security firm Integralis, worries about additional security need not stand in the way of businesses making the transition to the cloud.
Garry Sidaway, director of security strategy, said that the standard areas like data protection, data back-up and identity authentication still apply to users working with cloud computing.
"We understand what we should be doing, and we should not treat cloud as a completely different environment. We understand we need to protect it and there are hard rules and key concepts which we can still apply," Mr Sidaway stated.
He added that the cloud can help firms reduce costs, simplify security and improve management.
Research from AMI recently indicated that small businesses will spend an average of 15 per cent of budgets on cloud computing by 2015.
